Opportunities for Inter- and Intra-Regional Cooperation

Bangkok, Thailand, 27-29 October 2009

Quality assurance is at the core of higher education system development, not only within the framework of the European Higher Education Area, but also in the Asian region. Building mutual trust between key players in both regions is one important step in view of the long-term goals of developing common quality assurance standards in higher education.

This workshop focused on inter-regional and intra-regional cooperation in quality assurance in higher education. It aimed to discuss the effects of internal and external quality assurance systems as part of the overarching topic of institutional development.

Within the EU-Asia Higher Education Platform, the event constituted the fourth and last workshop between Asian and EU university representatives, experts and practitioners. Regional cooperation within the EU and Asia, but also inter-regional cooperation between higher education institutions, higher education networks and quality assurance agencies in both regions were promoted.

The overall aims of the workshop were to

▪ exchange information on goals, strategies and working methods of regional quality
assurance networks in Asia and Europe (exchange of good practices);

▪ exchange strategies of step-by-step evolution from regional networks into regional quality
assurance systems;

▪ strengthen the autonomous role of higher education institutions in regional quality
assurance procedures;

▪ discuss strategies how to improve employability and mobility of graduates, e.g. by
involving professional stakeholders into regional quality assurance;

▪ build trust among and between regional quality assurance networks in Asia and Europe,
thus creating a pool of international peers and promoting the internationalisation of
quality assurance in higher education; and

▪ identify common aims and tasks and promote cooperation.

Cooperation partner for the implementation of the Workshop was the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.
